So, hand in over last week, I caught a train down to Whitstable to see the last day of the Big Headed show and to meet Mat and Ed for a skate. This was the view from the skatepark...

New Ink (Margaret Kilgallen)

After writing my dissertation on zines, punk, riot grrrl and feminism, I found myself booking myself a tattoo of a Margaret Kilgallen drawing. Although, not looked at or even mentioned in my dissertation, Margaret Kilgallen is of huge importance and influence to me, both as an artist and as a woman. For those of you who don't know, she was an artist who believed in the touch of the human hand. All those beautifully crafted handmade shop signs that she so frequently saw inspired her greatly, and influenced the way she painted herself. She made many paintings of things including women surfing/skating, trees, nature, small shops, people, faces and hand made typography - howver 'printed' it looked, it was all done by her fingertips! (and a paintbrush!)

She painted everywhere: paper, canvas, wood, walls inside, walls outside, trains, cars, skateboards, cd covers....

She fell pregnant in 2001 and at the same time found out she had cancer. To save her baby, she refused chemotherepy and tragically passed away 2 weeks after giving birth to her child.

She will live on through her work. RIP Margaret.

'In Stock' exhibition and 'Stockwell Winter Games'

The second 'Out of Stockwell' project, the 'In Stock' exhibition and Stockwell Winter Games happend a few weeks ago. I have been part of the organising committee and ran a little Stall selling zines and t-shirts made by various Stockwell locals. Unfortunately, due to the stress of helping organise it and setting up shop, I did a pretty bad job of advertising it, however people still came and bought stuff. Big sellers were Lovenskate tees, Foxspot tees, Skateboard Religion hats, Jon Horner's skate comics and of course, Brash zine :)

I guess this little stall was an experiment and with the continual development of Out of Stockwell, I hope to run a 'pop up' shop whenever there is an 'Out of Stockwell' event.

So we had a little private view this evening for a 'works in progress' 3rd year illustration show down at the Wilson Road campus of college. Just five weeks into the 'this is it' year, we were asked to present drawings of our work so far in a show format that we all curated and hung together.

My contribution. I'm reading Fahrenheit 451. I literally photocopied a load of rough-as drawings, collaged them together and printed.

Spectacle at Supersonic

I was one of the six artists invited to respond to this year's theme of 'Spectacle.' Each of our response was exhibited at the market place by the cake stall...so you could gorge y'self silly while marveling over some spectacular imagery...

The term references the Roman practice of staging circuses, and the famous Roman elite philosophy of "Bread and Circuses."

The purpose of the spectacle was to maintain civil order during times of social and economic uncertainty.

It operates in two contexts simultaneously.

On one hand, it refers to high culture performances where audiences are drawn to an impressive visual accomplishment. This context coexists with its reference to low cultural shows operating in a 'folk' environment.

Electric Wizard at Supersonic 2011

Had a reet good time at Supersonic, shredding the Ideal ramp, hanging out with Log and Stu, eating Japanese curry and letting my body get eaten up by the loudest, most disgusting music you could ever imagine. The Capsule ladies describe Electric Wizard them as 'perhaps the heaviest band in the world' with words like 'violent,' 'bleak,' 'ritualistic'... and that, they were. No need for illicit substance here as I recieved all the blissful poison I could possibly desire from this stoner metal sludery, penetrating through every offifice of mine, eating at my barely alive hypnotic corpse like state as dirty great guitar riffs swelled and pumped within my my veins. I'm surprised I didn't explode...

I cannot contain my excitement for SUPERSONIC right now!! ARGHHH!

Supersonic Festival 2011 is just around the corner and I'm invited! I honestly cannot contain myself right now. It's in just under a week and I have literally been jumping up and down in my room and growling to myself with sheer overwelmingness. Not only is it the raddest festival on the earth (so much so, that I haven't missed one since I started attending in 2006) I was asked to do some artwork for the exhibition. So unbelievably honored! I went to the Home of Metal Exhibition a couple of days ago during my adventures back to Birmingham. Such a great exhibition thanks to the Capsule ladies, who are responsible for all the best gigs in Birmingham including the mighty Supersonic festival. Some facts about Heavy Metal if you didn't already know...

The term 'Heavy Metal' comes from the metal and coal industry that had been going since the 19th century in the Midlands. Birmingham and the Black Country was a 'hotbed of heavy industry.' The workers and their families lived in terraced houses right next to these factories, had to deal with the constant noise of heavy machinery pounding into their homes. You can imagine why people compared Sabbath's loud and proud new style of music to the sound of factories and their 1970 self titled LP marked year zero of the newly formed genre, Heavy Metal.

Tony Iommi, of Sabbath, used to work in one of these factories and suffered the fate of losing the tips of two of his fingers. He was told he'll never be able to play guitar again, he may as well 'pack it in.' Not to be fazed by that, Iommi made tips for his fingers out of old washing up liquid caps and developed a new way of playing with thinner strings, thus making new sounds with the electric guitar that hadn't been heard before, pioneering the way forward for Heavy Metal.

Punk and Heavy Metal music were emalgulated together in the 80's to form a new genre of music called Grindcore, encompassing screaming vocals with thick distorted down-tuned guitar riffs, but played so fast that it would make you want to throw up. This type of music was first played by Birmingham band Napalm Death. (They recorded their second album in Worcester, where I was born!)

So here are some photos from the opening night of Out of Stock. They are not very good pictures because I turned up to the show on my own, quite late and I was totally overwhelmed and vercome by the whole thing! So friggin' stoked though! Well anyway, I was so excited, I couldn't even take any decent pictures (not that I can ordinarily) and I completely forgot to take pics of my own work... so hopefully someone else did and i can get the images of them and put them up.

But yeah, what a show! Thanks to Toby Renton and Adam Johns for organising the show and letting me be involved.

Last night, Brigid and I went to the opening of Girls + Zines at Tatty Devine, a show curated by Barbara Ryan, and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time (Lovenskate HQ) to be asked to get involved in this! So Brash 2 is within the midst of this wonderful grrrly goodness, but also, I hope to bring Brash 3 along too (it's making progress folks!).

Valerie Phillips zine! (Gator Motel) She was there last night, but I was too shy to meet her!

For some reason, In my head, I read this as "Science Fiction, Ladies!" As if it was going to be an female friendly introduction to Science Fiction. Not that Science Fition needs to be "female friendly" 'cos it's rad!

I hope to do more workshops like this, but better! :) A Design-A-Deck workshop was also going on at the same time, ran by LCB ladies Mary Anne and Olivia. Rad job sistas!

BRUM ZINE FEST

So, I had a table at Birmingham Zine Festival yesterday and I took my mum to help. As much of an embaressment she was and didn't really 'get' the zine thing, it still meant she manned my stall while I went in search of ziney goodness (shown below). I sold quite a few zines and a few prints too! Super stoked. Thank you to everyone who came and bought stuff and showed interest! It was nice to meet people who wanted to do zine swaps and who had already got copies of my previous zines, really made the whole thing worthwhile doing :)

Doris zine anthology...

*Cindy (Crabb) writes her zine, Doris, like she is figuring out the human condition. She makes writing about the ssimplest and most comman things - playing music, childhood, cooking, or sex - resonate with universal understanding.

She helps us make sense of more complex things like the satisfaction from doing useful work, natural curiosity, the ability to use logic, gender dynamics, introspection, and the need for challenge and change, combating depression, and creating art and literature.

She explores more difficult subjects, like abortion, rape, sexual harassment, and dealing with the death of family, in a context that is enlightening and persoal, feeling like a close friend opening up to you. What's impressive though is that she realtes these things throughout her zine with seemless beauty.*

Such a rad book that I found at the zine fest (only one copy on the stall!) which will make excellent reading and research, not only for my own personal gain, but for my dissertation too. I will be looking at zines, specifically looking at per-zines, Riot Grrrl and Feminism.

I did this aaaages ago as part of the 'Fact' project I did at uni. Nothing 'final' ever materialised from that project and as hard as I worked, I am ashamed to say, I gave up on this one. But anyway, i initially looked at guns, then went deep into the subject looking at gun crime and gang warfare, particularly focusing on the States. This is an image I made as part of a poster making a point that it's not actually cool to be a 'gangsta.'

I teach skateboarding

Since February I have been working at Mile End Skate Park teaching skateboarding. I have been employed by UAB, (Urban Adventure Base) a youth activity centre in Mile End. It's absolute madness as I'm still a beginner myself, but I've been employed to teach young people the basics and give them confidence with skating. I guess I'm sort of a role model for the girls that wanna start as well. WE NEED MORE GIRLS SKATING, C'MON LADIES! I absolutley love working at Mile End. Everybody from the young people to my collegues and the guys at LCB skate shop is friggin' rad, cheers guys! Here is a pic of me 'on the job.' Have a giggle....

So as of a lot of you will already know, Mark Gonzales is in town and has been for a good few weeks now. I went upto the Adidas demo at the beginning of May, met him and gave him a zine. It felt like a really awkward situation as I was really nervous (I'd thought about it too much as I went with a plan to meet him and give him a copy of Brash) and he's just socially awkward anyway.... probably fed up with people bothering him and shoving zines in his hands! Well anyway, quite a bit star-struck, but stoked all the same.

I met him again a week later at Stockwell, and because I didn't know he was gonna be there, it was a lot better. I said hi, and he told me he read my zine and liked it. Rad. I showed him my (yet to be perfected) frontside carves around the bowl and it was all cool :) Apparently, French had texted him to come down for a skate. As If!

I'm making a comic strip about my experiences meeting Mark Gonsalez. It's only in it's early stages, but it should be good...probably will feature in the next issue of Brash

Ditronics - My Warp project

Ditronics is an electric music course run by Warp to give their listeners an innovative and exciting way to experience music on the label.
The term 'Ditronics' is an amalgalation of the phrase 'Do-It-Together' and 'electronics.' The ideas behind Ditronics are that of a DIY nature, focusing on getting everyone involved and making their own music, from scratch. And learning how to do it together.
Each event will be a day long giving enough time to actually make something.
Each week could focus on something different, in a step-by-step order, building on previously learnt skills.

Potential projects for each week could include...
Soldering and making contact mics
Make simple speakers
Make synthesizers from old radios
Circuit-bend electric toys
Make your own circuits
Make Theremins
Hack effects pedals, synths, samplers...

The sessions would be led by people in this field such as Brian Duffy (Modified Toy Orchestra), Nicolas Collins and John Richards (Dirty Electronics). Each week, they would be joined by a different Warp artist.

This is what I pitched to Warp for my idea about audiences experiencing Warp's music in a innovative and exciting way. The selection of images above show an example of a zine that could be given out at each of the events, helping people do the task of the session. it would then be something that they could keep and refer back to, to make a contact mic again, for example. The idea is that they have something visual infront of them that is not necessarily a youtube video tutorial. Maybe, not everyone has laptops infront of them when they're working on projects like this.
There is also a video that I made, which I will upload soon.

Please note that this is a hypothetical event that hasn't happened and probabely (unfortunately) won't happen.

More Warp Artists

I'm currently doing a project that involves coming up with new ways people can experience music on Warp's record label. I've been having trouble with it. I won't bore you with details, but basically it got to a point that I wasn't actually doing any drawings, although I was doing other stuff and trying to work through the project, and so it felt like I wasn't sticking to my roots. I mean I am doing a fucking illustration course! Anyway, the last few days have been a lot more productive, drawing wise, and the last couple of posts show a bit of what I have been doing. I still consider myself in the early stages of this project, even though there is something stupid like under 2 weeks left, but I'm finally figuring out what the final thing will be, which I will post up once the project is finished.

Brash Issue 2 is well on it's way people. It is not finished to the standard that I want it to be, but i had to give in 10 copies for assessment today and these are the pics of that...I didn't even staple most of them together!

They will look like this and you will be able to choose your copy from an assortment of different screen-printed covers. Inside features your 'traditional' methods of photocopying along with some risograph-printed pages. This is the bit i have struggled with to get done this week because getting on the Risograph printing machine has been like a very fat person getting on the busiest bus ever! No fear though, this week should be pretty quiet at college so I hope to get it done very soon.

Book Binding

On Friday, I did a book-binding workshop at college and these pictures show the result. It's only a sketchbook, but I'm pretty stoked and want to give it to my sister for her 18th birthday on Wednesday, seeing as I accidentally gave her a shit sketchbook for Christmas. I can't 'cos I had to give it in for assessment today. Gutted.

Stuck in my cave

I have been stuck in my room the past week, hard at work making Brash 2. It has been hellish because i have been indoors most of the time and with a cold too! However, I got a lot done and feel super productive :)

The saturday before this hellish cold fevery week however, I did enter that girls comp at the Pioneer skate Jam and it was so fucking rad. I ate shit many times, didn't land a single trick (not even the ones I can actually do) but it was so worth it... best day in a long time, and an event involving a turtle shaped board and a Death rider made a great story for the comic in Brash. Result!

OK, so I've been mega busy lately on issue 2 of Brash and it's gonna be a good one people! Full of skatey arty goodness. Some teasers above. Can you guess who they are? I've been so busy with Brash zine, and other project tasks and workshops our forever demanding, but amazing tutor sets upon us, that I haven't even had time to skate (blasphemous i know!). Just like a few of my fellow Camberwellians, I have not had access to a scanner over Christmas whilst being at home, but now that I am back in my London home with my nice computer and 3 in 1 printer, which only one out of the three is currently in operation, and luckily it is the right one, I can now scan and upload some drawings. The above is a comic strip (part of the xmas zine) based on a true story...well, just a photograph I found on the Gnargore blog actually. Yet another picture taken of me because of my 'infamous' tattoo. I met the director/Curator of New Image Art when I went to the Moniker art fair recently. She spotted me as I was walking round and started talking to me and took a photo of me. Such a lovely, lovely lady who has curated shows with Neckface, Cleon Peterson, Os Gemos,Clare Rojas, Deanna Templeton, Ed Tepmleton, Faile, and Jo Jackson to name a few.

Saw some footage of the Ladies skateboard series and those gals are so fucking dope. well bummed out i didn't get my lazy arse at least to Manchester (some sick video footage below) ...I am progressing with the ol' skateboarding tho so I should just give it a go at one of these competions. I dunno. Deffo go support the cause and rep the ladies even if i am shit and make a twat of myself. Well it doesn't matter anyway now as I've gone and rolled my ankle innit! First time as well, so proper feeling sorry myself. Well at least I can say this is a proper skateboard injury as I was trying rock 'n' rolls on the quarter at Stockwell and I've never tried them before. I was proper going for it as well 'cos I was being filmed....another first. No paint no gain I guess. C'mon harriet, stop feeling sorry for yourself. Go to bed and wake up tomorrow feeling refreshed :)

This is a comic I made on the Risograph Printer for a uni project 'Fiction.' I was meant to illustrate a book (Moby Dick) but instead I went off on my won weird little creative spiel and made my own story up instead, loosely based on the epic novel. It was such a shit to make, but here is the front page, back page and a page of the comic itself in all it's garish, mis-registered glory! I am selling copies for a fiver if anyone is interested.

Supersonic 2010

Last weekend (well it was when I first tried to upload this shit onto my blog, but my internet was being gay) I went to Supersonic in Birmingham, like I have done for the past 5 years now! It is the best festival ever because it is the only festival I know of that the whole line up is actually good! And if you don't have to camp! The Ideal ramp is also open through part of the festival and what could be better than DOOM THRASHING, NOISE GRINDING, DRONE SHREDDING live music and skateboarding! (didn't actually get on the ramp that much due to lots of kids snaking). This year I probably knew the least on the line up than any other year so over half of what i saw, i had never actually heard before, but is was so so sick just experiencing new live music that I will no doubt endeavor to get hold of :) Here are some shit photos I took...

So today I had an epicly productive Sunday, got up and watced Flight of the Conchords (well into that right now) and then started painting a deck I found at South Bank...well actually, I think I nicked from some guy who had already found it, but he forgave me 'cos I'm a girl.' It makes me wonder, but what if I wasn't a girl, just some skanky skater brat, would he fight me for it or something? I'd be well up for fighting him and I bet I'd win, instead I told him to 'check out my blog'...proper Harriet style...since he already tried getting my number, facebook and email address! Well anyway, this board painting is for you matey! You can't actually have it though.

I went to see Black Mountain and The Black Angels play last week and they were proper rad! I was so stressed and had bad energy then so it was soooo goood just to see some live music. I unleashed my demons and had a reet mosh....I tell you no lie...i was thrashin' pushin' all the stinky men around, i was just like Fuck this, I don't even care, dancing and throwing my 6day old greasy yellow hair about....whatever.

This is the product of the gig on the skateboard from the pencil drawing that I did after the gig I went to and moshed.
